    Golf Canada Update – Handicap Changes

    Golf Canada has converted to the new World Handicap System (WHS). While there are many changes behind the scenes, there are a couple of things that you need to be aware of when entering scores or using your handicap.

    First, the Stroke Index on the scorecard (New scorecard) has been changed as a result of the course being re-rated under the new rules for the WHS. If you look at the attached scorecard you will see that from the White Tees hole number 1 which used to be rated as the 18th hole in terms of difficulty, but is now rated as the 13th most difficult hole.

    The second change to note is the maximum score you can take on a hole for the purposes of determining your handicap. There is now a single rule in effect for all players regardless of your current handicap. The maximum score per hole is Net Double Bogey. Net Double Bogey is determined by the par for the hole, your handicap and the Stroke Index for the hole.

    For example, if a player with a 10-handicap playing from the White Tees scores an 8 on hole #2 then the maximum score they record for handicap purposes is 7. Hole #2 is a par 4 and its Stroke Index is 5 so the player is entitled to a stroke on the hole. Net Double Bogey is calculated from Par (4) + double Bogey (2) + Strokes Allowed (1) = 7.

    If that same player scores an 8 on hole # 1 then the maximum score, they can record for handicap purposes is 6. Hole #1 has a Stroke Index of 13, which is greater than the players handicap of 10, so the player is not entitled to a stroke on the hole. The score is determined as Par (4) + Double Bogey (2) + Strokes Allowed (0) for a 6. If your handicap is higher than 18, you will be entitled to multiple strokes per hole, relative to your handicap and the Stroke Index on each hole.

    For more information, please visit Golf Canada Handicap Rules.

    The Kimberley Golf Club Executive held our first meeting of the year this past week.

    We have received many inquiries from house-bound members about when the course will be opening. Tim reports that to date he is very happy with the weather conditions we have experienced so far this winter. While we still have a couple of months to go, if the current trend continues we should be looking at a normal mid to late April opening.

    Duncan MacLeod from Purcell provided us with an update on their immediate plans for the golf course and ongoing developments with the school. They are making positive progress on both. With regard to the golf course there is some new equipment for Tim in the works and possibly some other new additions for the pro shop and food and beverage. Final details are just being worked out as we speak. Duncan also informed us that he is working with Joanna about some improvements in the lounge, some menu options and expanded hours of operation for this season. As things progress, Purcell will keep us in the loop.

    The events committee is meeting to finalize event and tournament details for this season and work out schedules with Purcell. Although we expect we may still need to follow similar COVID rules to last season, there should be an opportunity to put on most of our usual events with minor modifications in compliance with provincial health rules that may be in effect over the summer.

    The membership committee is waiting on possible revisions to membership perks, such as reciprocals with other courses, discounts, etc. These will be posted prior to the start of the season.

    Purcell has developed a new logo (see below) which includes a reference to the club.  The board is very pleased with it. The inclusion of our club name is wonderful and demonstrates the partnership we are in. You should be seeing this logo on the new carts, at the entrance and around the clubhouse and pro shop in the spring.

    We still have more work to do in preparation for the start of the season. Watch for future newsletters as more information becomes available.

    Report from the Annual General Meeting

    The Annual General Meeting was held on October 27th. Several changes to the Club’s Bylaws were approved by members in attendance. These changes bring our Bylaws into alignment with the Service Agreement between Kimberley Golf Club and Purcell Golf, and clarify membership classifications that will be available in future. Following is a summary of the changes.

    1. Definition of Legacy and Non-Legacy Categories:

     “Legacy” members are defined as all members in good standing during the 2020 golf season, including those who requested and were granted as exemption due to medical reasons. Legacy members must remain Members in good standing on a year by year basis in order to retain this status. Legacy members will continue to be offered Legacy (“Original”) membership rates that are subject to limited annual increases as defined in the Service Agreement between Kimberley Golf Club and Purcell International Education Inc.

    “Non-Legacy” members are all other members of the Kimberley Golf Club, including:

    Members who purchased memberships for the 2021 season and subsequent seasons;

    Legacy members who fail to maintain their Membership in Good Standing status for any future season;

    Non-Legacy members will be offered rates as negotiated annually between Purcell Golf and the Kimberley Golf Club. These rates are not subject to the limited annual increase provisions that Legacy members enjoy.

    2 Changes to Membership Classes offered to Legacy and Non-Legacy Members:

    Membership classes offered within the Legacy category:

    • Adult

    • Super Senior

    To All Members;

    We have been receiving reports that some members have encountered difficulty in entering scores into the Golf Canada handicap system.

    Upon investigation it appears that members who use the cell phone app to access the Golf Canada handicap system need to download a fresh copy of the Golf Canada app. Apparently there were some changes implemented over the winter, so a fresh download will provide access to the correct version of the app.

    A few other members have reported that they have forgotten their password or user id. In order to reset either of these, go to the Golf Canada web page and click on Forgot User Id or Forgot Password. Golf Canada will send reset instructions to the e-mail address on file. If you have do not receive an e-mail from Golf Canada, then it is possible that your have changed your e-mail address or the current address on file is incorrect. In either case, please send an e-mail to and request that we update your Golf Canada membership record.

    Course Policies - 01 May 2020

  • 2 May 2020 10:38 AM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

    With the imminent opening of the golf course we are all looking forward to the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, sunshine and somewhat limited social interaction. We would like to ensure that we continue to enjoy these privileges for the remainder of the summer.

    As a follow-up to yesterday's e-mail issued by Purcell Golf we are reminding members of the necessity to adhere to these policies. In the event that you did not receive the e-mail, please see the attached notice. (KGC Opening Date.pdf)

    The Board fully supports the efforts of Purcell Golf to get the course open and the policies that have been put in place. Failure to comply with these measures could result in health authorities ordering the closure of the course. We have already received reports of members not following these measures. The actions of a few may impact everyone, so we ask that you familiarize yourself with these policies and continue to keep up to date as policies may need to change over time.

    The clubhouse and all areas marked with yellow tape are off-limits.

    You must check in with staff before going to the range or playing, no exceptions.

    Tee times must be booked on line at Tee-On Tee Time Booking. Do not ask staff to book your tee times, their focus needs to be on keeping things running and keeping common areas and equipment properly sanitized.

    Abusive and argumentative behavior directed at staff is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

    All tournament and events including Ladies Day and Men's Day are suspended until further notice.

    Failure to follow these guidelines may result in members being asked to leave the premises. Continued incidents may result in suspension of membership privileges.

    We are all looking forward to getting back to our favourite form of recreation. The policies developed by Simon and team are designed to keep everyone safe and in compliance with public health regulations. Hopefully we will get through the summer without any further disruption to our daily routines. We hope to see you out on the course over the next few weeks.
